What is the best car for you? For most people, it's the car that starts every morning, the comfortable one that gets you from point A to point B safely, often something modern and safe. Some drivers prioritize speed, others reliability, and for a select few, they choose to disregard all of those things. So what defines any car as the "best" car? Well, we think it's something simple yet often overlooked, smiles per dollar.
We put our theory to the test, by teaching our friends how to drive manual in a $700 1988 Mazda 323, and the smiles that were created speak for themselves.
By almost every measurement people value, this is lesser car. There is no technology. It is old and inefficient. Sure you could save up for a modern car and have peace of mind, but where's the fun in that?
Well, we can tell you where the fun lays in the cheaper car. It is in the experience, the memories, and the sometimes questionable reliability that keeps you on your toes. It is a car where a friend burning your clutch isn't a pain, it's a shared memory that strengthens the bond you have with your vehicle.
Sometimes the Best Car may not actually be the best car. It is the car that gives you the right feeling. The feeling you can only get from skinny wheels, a manual gearbox, and an engine you can hear; it's a car that asks you to take a part in the process. None of this means that the cheap, older, or slower car is better. It means you should probably figure out what you're asking a car to give you. If what you're looking for is design, mechanical feel, or memories, don't assume that spending more money buys you more of those things. Sometimes the worse car, is a better car.
